“Yo creo que la literatura realista, desde un principio, ha hablado de las víctimas. Del individuo común y corriente –y la literatura realista siempre se ocupa de individuos comunes y corrientes– en lucha contra el mundo externo que, naturalmente, acaba por vencerlo... La corriente realista tiende a poner en tela de juicio el significado humano de los sucesos y de las cosas. La medida de nuestro realismo es la medida de nuestra propia amenaza contra el arte que practicamos. El realismo ha aceptado y rechazado invariablemente las circunstancias de la vida diaria. Aceptó escribir sobre la vida diaria, pero intentó hacerlo recurriendo a procedimientos extraordinarios. Este es el caso de Flaubert. El asunto puede ser ordinario, ruin, degradante, pero redimido por el arte. El ambiente sugiere la forma, el estilo en que debe ser presentado. Yo trabajo apoyado en ese fundamento... Cuando escribo, pienso en algún ser humano que pueda comprenderme. Esto lo tomo muy en cuenta. Pero no pienso en ningún lector ideal. Permítame añadir esto: cuando escribo me acepto a ojos cerrados, como ese excéntrico que no puede concebir que alguien no comprenda con absoluta claridad todas sus excentricidades”.
