Ahora parece que según las vecinas mi carácter pasivo y emocional quizá se deba a que mi madre se encontraba embarazada de mí el mes en que el Papa visitó México por primera vez. No lo han dicho así, pero en el momento en que mi madre lo mencionó (yo tomaba mi jugo de imitación y endulzaba pacientemente mi café con leche) las buenas mujeres me han mirado y han sonreído como si dijera: "Pero míralo, igualito al Papa", casi como si mi madre hubiera sido embarazada por el mismísimo Papa. Lo que hago es levantarme lo más lentamente que puedo, miro a mi alrededor sin mover la cabeza y sin que mis pasos me noten me alejo de la mesa mientras la sonrisa de estas buenas mujeres. comienza a borrarse. Luego, ya más tranquilo, me voy a la cama y me pongo a jugar un rato con mi "Muñequita Papá Hemnigway", varios disfraces disponibles.
